Wrexham shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2029

Wrexham, Blackpool, Milton Keynes, and Sheffield have been shortlisted as the final four contenders to become the UK City of Culture for 2029. The selection was made by an expert advisory panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond, narrowing the field from a longlist of nine locations.

Each shortlisted location will receive a minimum of £125,000 to further develop its proposal. The eventual winner, to be announced in early 2027, will receive £10 million to fund a year of cultural events and activities. If successful, Wrexham would become the first Welsh location to hold the title.

The Wrecsam2029 bid team estimates that securing the title could generate an economic impact exceeding £200 million through increased investment, job creation, and tourism. The bid is supported by over 150 ambassadors, including figures such as Rhys Ifans, Matthew Rhys, and Carol Vorderman.
