Wrexham UK City of Culture 2029 bid progress

Overview

Wales continues to see growth in its creative and cultural sectors, supported by media innovation initiatives like Media Cymru. In Cardiff, the PLAYBACK festival highlighted the expansion of the Welsh media ecosystem, while Media Cymru reported five years of progress in supporting research, development, and job creation.

As part of these cultural developments, Wrexham has progressed in its campaign to become the UK City of Culture for 2029. After being long-listed, Wrexham has been selected as one of the final four contenders, alongside Blackpool, Milton Keynes, and Sheffield. This selection was made by an expert advisory panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond.

The shortlisted locations will receive at least £125,000 to refine their proposals. The final winner, to be announced in early 2027, will receive £10 million. If successful, Wrexham would be the first Welsh location to hold the title, with the bid team estimating an economic impact exceeding £200 million.

The bid has garnered support from over 150 ambassadors, including Rhys Ifans, Matthew Rhys, and Carol Vorderman. Actor Rhys Ifans stated that the bid represents an opportunity to put both Wrexham and Wales on the map as major centers for creativity and the arts. An advisory panel from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is scheduled to visit Wrexham in late November.
