Wrocław cracks down on illegal high‑speed electric bikes

Polish authorities are targeting illegally modified electric vehicles that resemble bicycles but lack pedals and use a throttle, reaching speeds up to 70 km/h. Under road traffic law, such machines are classified as motorbikes or mopeds, requiring registration, a driver’s licence and compulsory liability insurance.

In Wrocław, police stopped a 22‑year‑old rider who was fined a total of 2,000 zł for operating the illegal vehicle, driving without a helmet and lacking proper documentation. The vehicle was impounded. From January to May 2026, municipal police issued 27 fines totalling 8,700 zł for prohibited entry into pedestrian zones and 15 fines totalling 7,000 zł for traffic‑signal violations. Offenders can face penalties up to 5,000 zł and seizure of the vehicle if they lack the required registration and insurance.
