Wrocław Medical University Study Highlights Gut Jet Lag Effects on Travelers

Researchers at the Wrocław Medical University in Poland published a study in the journal Nutrients describing “gut jet lag,” a temporary misalignment between the body's central circadian clock and the rhythms of the intestinal microbiota when crossing multiple time zones.

The desynchronisation can impair the gut barrier, reduce short‑chain fatty‑acid production and lead to digestive complaints such as bloating, constipation and a feeling of heaviness, as well as poorer sleep quality and lower energy levels. Co‑author Kacper Wiśniewski explained that “our digestive system is extremely sensitive to these changes because the gut‑brain axis follows a tightly regulated circadian rhythm.”

The authors suggest practical measures for travelers, including gradual adjustments to sleep and meal times before departure, maintaining regular light exposure, staying hydrated and avoiding abrupt dietary changes, to mitigate the gut‑related symptoms during the first few days of a trip.
