Würzburg Launches UV‑Index Boards to Guide Sun Protection

The health department of Würzburg and the surrounding district has installed four UV‑Index boards at local swimming sites – Dallenberg‑Bad, Nautiland, Maininselbad in Ochsenfurt and Geisbergbad in Veitshöchheim. The boards display the current UV radiation level and give recommendations for protective measures such as shade, clothing, sunscreen and timing of outdoor activities.

The Bavarian Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention introduced its 250th UV‑Index board in the state in mid‑July, and the Würzburg installations are part of this wider effort. Citizens can also scan a QR code on the boards to receive up‑to‑date UV‑max values from the German Weather Service and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection on their smartphones.

Second mayor Dr. Sandra Vorlová emphasized the health importance, stating, “UV radiation is invisible and not felt immediately, but its negative effects are very real,” and highlighted that simple protective steps can significantly reduce short‑term sunburn and long‑term skin‑cancer risks.
