Wuhan boy hospitalized with severe kidney failure due to sugary drink consumption

An 8-year-old boy in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, has been hospitalized in critical condition due to severe kidney failure and type 2 diabetes. The child, identified as Xiao Hao, exhibited symptoms such as loss of appetite, skin itching, and facial swelling for six months, which his parents initially dismissed as minor issues.

The situation escalated when the boy experienced intense abdominal pain and blood in his urine. Medical tests at Wuhan General Hospital revealed a blood creatinine level exceeding 1,000 µmol/l, indicating severe renal impairment, alongside high blood sugar levels. Doctors diagnosed him with advanced chronic kidney disease and uremia, a life-threatening complication.

Medical professionals identified a daily habit of consuming two to three bottles of carbonated soft drinks as a primary factor. While the boy has passed the initial critical stage, long-term treatment is expected to be difficult. Doctors noted that while dialysis can sustain life, a kidney transplant may be necessary to ensure his physical development and quality of life.
