Pediatric kidney failure linked to dietary habits in China
Overview
Reports from China have highlighted cases of severe kidney failure in young children linked to poor dietary habits, specifically the high consumption of sugary beverages and fried foods.
In Henan, an 8-year-old boy was diagnosed with chronic kidney and severe heart failure, requiring dialysis multiple times per week. Medical professionals attributed his condition to long-term consumption of fried foods and sugary drinks like bubble tea, noting his creatinine levels were more than ten times the normal limit.
Similarly, in Wuhan, an 8-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition with advanced chronic kidney disease, uremia, and type 2 diabetes. His symptoms included abdominal pain and blood in his urine, with creatinine levels exceeding 1,000 µmol/l. Doctors identified the daily consumption of two to three bottles of carbonated soft drinks as a primary factor. While the child has passed the initial critical stage, medical experts suggest a kidney transplant may eventually be necessary.
