In 2022 WWE chairman Vince McMahon contemplated ending Gunther's main‑roster momentum, intending to send the Austrian wrestler back to NXT after a controversial segment with R‑Truth. McMahon's departure from creative control prevented that setback, allowing Gunther to retain the Intercontinental Championship and continue his run.

A year later, at SummerSlam 2025, Gunther lost the World Heavyweight Championship. Since that defeat, he has not captured another world title in WWE, despite remaining a prominent figure on the roster.
