Around the same period, McMahon reportedly considered ending Gunther’s main‑roster momentum by returning him to NXT after a controversial segment with R‑Truth. McMahon’s departure from creative control later that year prevented the planned demotion, allowing Gunther to retain the Intercontinental Championship and continue his ascent.

Gunther eventually captured the World Heavyweight Championship, holding it until SummerSlam 2025, where he lost the title. Since that defeat, he has not secured another world championship, though he remains a prominent figure on WWE’s roster.
