Sikh truck driver stabbed 17 times at Wyoming rest stop
A 28-year-old Sikh truck driver from Sacramento, Gurvinder Singh, was stabbed 17 times during an unprovoked attack at the Bitter Creek rest area on Interstate 80 in Wyoming. The incident occurred early Sunday morning while Singh was traveling to Pennsylvania. The assailant allegedly followed Singh into a restroom, where the attack took place, leaving the victim with severe wounds to his neck, chest, and ribs.
A Hispanic family at the rest area assisted the victim and provided critical information that helped law enforcement track the suspect. Wyoming Highway Patrol subsequently arrested 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak in nearby Carbon County. Bzdak has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.
While authorities stated that a motive has not yet been determined, the attack has sparked significant concern within the South Asian and Sikh communities. Community leaders and organizations, such as the Jakara Movement and UNITED SIKHS, have raised fears regarding rising anti-immigrant and anti-Sikh rhetoric. The incident follows a controversial, now-deleted social media post by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that featured a caricature of a Sikh truck driver.
