Wyoming sees increase in summer tornado activity

Tornado occurrences have risen in Wyoming during the 2026 summer, prompting heightened warnings and safety guidance. Storm chasers recorded intense thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and multiple tornadoes across the state, noting that while Wyoming tornadoes are typically smaller than those in other regions, they can still cause significant damage.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) emphasizes five key safety steps: stay informed via local alerts or NOAA radios; seek shelter in a basement, interior room or safe room; follow school and workplace tornado drills; avoid mobile homes, tents or open structures; and, if driving, move to the nearest sturdy shelter or, failing that, take cover in a low‑lying area. These measures aim to protect residents, pets and property from the growing summer severe‑weather threat.
