Brazil electoral authorities probe X algorithm and Mobiliza party funding

Brazilian electoral authorities are addressing potential irregularities in campaign resource distribution and social media algorithms.

Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Minister André Mendonça has ordered the social media platform X to provide technical explanations within 24 hours regarding its candidate recommendation filter. The order follows allegations from the Brasil Pronto Pra Mais coalition that X's mechanism was applied selectively. While X's public code initially listed 665 accounts, a cross-reference with official registry data identified 1,559 additional candidate accounts that were not being filtered from the 'For You' recommendation tab. Following these reports, X updated its algorithm to include nearly 2,400 profiles.

Separately, Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes has given the Mobilização Nacional (Mobiliza) party 48 hours to clarify its allocation of campaign funds and free electoral advertising time. The decision comes after complaints from candidate Dr. Leonardo do Aragão and the Instituto José do Patrocínio, who allege the party failed to provide proportional resources to Black candidates, potentially constituting a systemic fraud against affirmative action policies.
