Xai-Xai municipal official accused of leading land fraud scheme
A municipal official from the Xai-Xai Municipal Council in Gaza Province is accused of leading a fraudulent scheme targeting local citizens. The suspect allegedly charged between 20,000 and 25,000 meticais per process to facilitate the sale of land and the issuance of economic activity licenses.
Victims report that after making payments, they received documents that were later discovered to be falsified. One group of four sisters reported losing more than 60,000 meticais in attempts to acquire land in the Praia and Inhamissa areas. The municipal legal office has confirmed receiving at least eight formal complaints, though officials warn the number of victims may increase.
The official has reportedly fled and is currently at large. The incident has sparked widespread indignation and distrust among residents regarding the integrity of municipal services and internal oversight mechanisms. Some victims have also reported receiving threats from individuals associated with the suspect.
