Xbox addresses recent outage and tests faster game download feature
On July 28, 2026 Xbox experienced a widespread service disruption after an external licensing service failed, preventing many users from signing in, viewing their game libraries, and launching titles. Microsoft’s Xbox technology director Scott Van Vliet described the outage as "unacceptable" and explained that the issue also impacted several publishing partners. The company isolated the faulty infrastructure and gradually restored service by 2:30 PM PDT, and announced plans to strengthen login and game‑launch mechanisms, improve fault detection, and provide clearer user communications.
Separately, Microsoft announced a new optional feature being tested in the Xbox console and PC client (update 2608.260719‑2200 Alpha). The feature continuously evaluates available download servers, selects the fastest connection, and switches servers during downloads to maintain optimal speed. Early testing on a ROG Ally X device achieved transfer rates of up to 250 Mb/s, promising noticeably quicker game installations for users.
