Xbox licensing service outage
Entities: Scott Van Vliet · Microsoft · Xbox (Microsoft) · Xbox · Physical disc games
Overview
In late July 2026 a global Xbox outage began around 10 p.m. Mexico City time on 26 July and lasted nearly 24 hours. A failure in an external licensing verification service blocked user sign‑ins, digital purchases, downloads, multiplayer, and Store access, and unexpectedly prevented many consoles from launching games installed from physical discs despite the intended offline capability. Microsoft’s CTO Scott Van Vliet confirmed the licensing service as a single point of failure, announced a post‑incident review, a forthcoming permanent update to remove the dependency, and an interim system update to restore disc‑based play.
The outage overlapped with a PlayStation Network failure that started on 24 July, which also barred access to digital games and apps. The back‑to‑back disruptions intensified user protests calling for reliable physical‑media options. Microsoft pledged improvements to login mechanisms, fault detection, user communications, and is testing an optional feature that automatically selects the fastest download servers, with early trials showing speeds up to 250 Mb/s.
