Xbox faces studio closures and denied exclusive game rumors

Microsoft’s Xbox division has undergone a leadership change, with long‑time executives Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departing and Asha Sharma, formerly of Instacart and Meta, taking the helm. The shift has sparked fan speculation, but Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball publicly refuted rumours that the company was abandoning its exclusive‑game strategy, confirming titles such as “Gears of War: E‑Day” and “Clockwork Revolution” will stay Xbox‑only.

At the same time, insiders report that several mid‑size studios under Xbox – Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, Double Fine and even Arkane Lyon – are under threat of closure or restructuring. Compulsion Games was shut down shortly after its critically praised release “South of Midnight.” These developments highlight a tension between Xbox’s public commitment to a pipeline of signature exclusives and the economic realities of managing a large portfolio of game developers.
