Microsoft freezes third‑party Xbox Game Pass agreements, raising concerns for developers

Industry sources reported that Microsoft has halted the signing of new third‑party contracts for its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Fernando Rizo of Kaboodle Games told the "The Business of Video Games" podcast that studios with advanced talks were suddenly left without response, describing the situation as having "the rug pulled out from under their feet." Kaboodle Games reportedly completed one of the last deals before the pause.

The pause coincides with a broader Xbox restructuring under new CEO Asha Sharma, including price increases and a shift in strategy after the loss of day‑one releases such as Call of Duty. Sharma has not publicly commented on the alleged freeze. Industry observers note that the lack of new third‑party titles could diminish the service’s content pipeline and affect subscriber retention, especially as some developers argue that more blockbuster games are needed to keep the platform attractive.
