Xbox Game Studios chief Craig Duncan resigns, triggering leadership shake‑up

Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, announced his resignation after 20 months in the role, sending an internal email that said, “When I took the leadership of XGS 20 months ago, my purpose was to serve our studios, our teams and the people who create our games.” Louise O’Connor, the division’s chief of staff, also left the company at the same time. With both departures, the studios that report to Xbox will temporarily report to Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, while a permanent replacement is sought.

The exits come amid a financial strain on the Xbox division. New head Asha Sharma disclosed a profit margin of only 3 % and referenced heavy past investment in content and hardware. Analysts link the leadership turnover to a broader restructuring that could see the closure or spin‑off of several studios, including Compulsion Games, Double Fine and Ninja Theory, as reported by Bloomberg and other outlets. The situation highlights ongoing challenges for Microsoft’s gaming business and may lead to further layoffs or studio divestments.

These developments affect a wide range of Xbox‑linked studios—Halo, The Coalition, Rare, Obsidian, Playground Games and others—potentially reshaping Microsoft’s strategy for exclusive titles and its Game Pass model.
