Xbox and PlayStation Outage Halts Digital and Disc Game Access
Late on July 26, Xbox services suffered a worldwide outage that began around 10 p.m. Mexico City time and lasted close to 24 hours. The disruption prevented users from logging in, purchasing or downloading games, accessing the Xbox Store, and, unexpectedly, from launching physical disc games offline due to a license‑verification failure.
Microsoft identified the cause as a failure in an external licensing service that the consoles depend on. Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet confirmed the issue, said the design should allow disc games to work offline, and announced that a system update will be issued to fix the problem.
The incident coincided with a separate PlayStation Network outage on July 24 that also blocked access to digital games and apps. Both outages sparked user protests demanding reliable access to purchased physical media.
