Xbox announces studio consolidations and 268 layoffs

Microsoft is continuing a major organizational restructuring of its Xbox division, announcing 268 additional job cuts across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and central management functions. This move is part of a larger plan to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,200 positions, with the company stating it is roughly three-quarters of the way through the process.

Significant changes to studio management and franchise ownership were also announced. Activision will now take over the development of the next mainline Halo title through a new, dedicated team that will operate independently from Call of Duty development. Halo Studios will transition to a smaller role focused on supporting existing games and the community. Additionally, Activision will expand its oversight to include the Rare and World’s Edge studios.

Further consolidations include Bethesda absorbing Obsidian Entertainment to collaborate on a new Fallout project, and King expanding its remit to include Microsoft Casual Games. Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios will merge into a single entity focused on the Forza and Fable franchises. Meanwhile, the future of Ninja Theory remains uncertain as the company enters consultations regarding a potential closure after two attempted sales fell through.
