SCO Summit opens in Bishkek to discuss security and financial autonomy
The 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit commenced on August 31, 2026, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, marking the organization's 25th anniversary. Under the theme '25 years of the SCO: together for sustainable peace, development and prosperity,' the summit brings together leaders from over 20 countries, including full members China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Key discussions at the summit focus on combating terrorism, violent extremism, and cybercrime, as well as enhancing regional connectivity and infrastructure development. A significant priority for member states is the creation of an independent financial architecture and alternative payment systems to reduce reliance on Western institutions.
On the sidelines of the summit, several high-level bilateral meetings took place.
