Xi Jinping begins state visit to North Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on 8 June 2026, starting a two‑day state visit – the first by a Chinese leader to North Korea since 2019. He was accompanied by senior officials including Premier Li Qiang, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his wife, Peng Liyuan. The visit coincided with the 65th anniversary of the China‑North Korea friendship treaty and included a formal welcome at Sunan International Airport.

The delegation is expected to discuss North Korea’s expanding nuclear programme, recent construction of an underground nuclear‑material facility, and the country’s growing military ties with Russia. Analysts note that Xi may also raise the proposed road bridge linking Hyesan to the Russian border, which could affect regional logistics and China’s access to the Sea of Japan. The meeting underscores Beijing’s interest in stabilising its relationship with Pyongyang while addressing international concerns over nuclear proliferation.
