Xi Jinping inspects Inner Mongolia to promote green development

Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted an inspection tour in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, on October 16, 2026, emphasizing the integration of high-quality economic growth with environmental protection. During his visit to the Huangqihai nature reserve, Xi focused on the restoration of wetland ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity, specifically addressing efforts to stabilize water levels in lakes previously threatened by climate fluctuations.

Xi advocated for a comprehensive conservation approach covering mountains, forests, grasslands, and deserts, while calling for the coordination of carbon emission reductions and pollution control with economic expansion. He also stressed the importance of minimizing human interference to allow for natural ecological recovery.

In addition to environmental issues, the tour included an inspection of the Qahar high-tech industrial development zone. Xi reviewed the progress of the ‘Data in the East, Computing in the West’ national project, which aims to redistribute computing capacity across China. He urged better planning and resource support to ensure the efficient operation of digital infrastructure and encouraged the development of energy-efficient computing centers, leveraging Inner Mongolia’s significant wind and solar energy resources.
