Kyrgyzstan to host SCO summit with visits from Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi
Kyrgyzstan is preparing to host the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, with the formal meeting of the Council of Heads of State scheduled for September 1. Up to 21 heads of state are expected to attend the gathering.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is confirmed to attend the summit and conduct a state visit to Kyrgyzstan. During his visit, discussions are expected to focus on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, a project with an estimated construction cost of $4.7 billion. The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Company LLC is owned by China (51%), with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan each holding 24.5%.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also participate in the summit following a visit to Uzbekistan from August 29 to 30. On the sidelines of the SCO summit, Modi is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to review the India-Russia relationship.
In preparation for the diplomatic event, a program has been launched in Bishkek to broadcast selected China Media Group film and television content on Kyrgyz national media to promote cultural exchange.
