Overview

Pakistan has begun organizational preparations for the 2027 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State Summit, slated to be hosted in Islamabad. In August 2025, Pakistan’s National Coordinator for SCO Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Faisal, met with representatives from Russia, Iran, China, and India to discuss chairmanship requirements.

As the organization approaches its 25th anniversary, the 26th SCO summit is being held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from August 31 to September 1. The summit is expected to produce the ‘Bishkek Jubilee Declaration’ and will include an SCO Plus meeting with various partners and observers.

During the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held discussions regarding the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline. The project remains stalled due to pricing disputes, with Beijing reportedly seeking rates closer to Russia's domestic prices. In separate bilateral meetings, President Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed strengthening their strategic partnership, noting a two percent increase in trade turnover and a 16 percent rise in tourism exchange in 2025. Prime Minister Modi also held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding regional security and West Asian tensions.

Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Bishkek following a diplomatic tour of Central Asia, emphasized the necessity for member nations to collaborate in creating a region free from ‘terrorism, separatism, and extremism.’ During his visit, he engaged with the Indian diaspora and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial.
