Xi Jinping to Visit North Korea as US‑China Relations Enter New Phase

Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea for a two‑day state visit beginning Monday, according to Chinese and North Korean state media. The agenda has not been disclosed, but the trip follows recent high‑level contacts, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s April visit, Premier Li Qiang’s October visit and the reinstatement of passenger rail and air links in March after pandemic‑related closures. Xi’s visit comes after the May Beijing summit between US President Donald Trump and Xi, where the two leaders affirmed a shared goal of denuclearising North Korea, highlighting China’s role as Pyongyang’s principal partner amid growing North Korea‑Russia cooperation.

Trump’s three‑day trip to Beijing underscored a broader shift in the post‑Cold‑War order. Beyond trade talks, the leaders discussed managing strategic competition, with Xi referencing the “Tucídides trap” and proposing a framework of “constructive strategic stability” and “competitive coexistence.” The visit featured ceremonial receptions at the Great Hall of the People and the Temple of Heaven, and a closed‑door meeting at Zhongnanhai, signalling US acknowledgement of limits to its dominance and China’s desire to institutionalise rivalry without systemic conflict.
