Xi Jinping visits North Korea, vows deeper cooperation against hegemony

Chinese President Xi Jinping made his first trip to North Korea in seven years, arriving for a two‑day visit that coincided with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 65th anniversary of the China‑North Korea Friendship, Cooperation and Assistance Treaty. In an article published in North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun, Xi said China would strengthen ties with Pyongyang, increase exchanges in all areas, and jointly oppose "hegemony, authoritarianism and attempts to revive militarism" that threaten regional security.

The visit follows a series of recent diplomatic contacts, including a September 2025 meeting in Beijing, a Chinese foreign minister’s trip to Pyongyang in April, and the restoration in March of rail and passenger‑air links that had been suspended for six years. Xi’s remarks also highlighted support for a multilateral order centered on the United Nations and international law, while North Korea reiterated that its nuclear status is irreversible.
