Xi Jinping’s North Korea visit reaffirms China‑DPRK alliance

Chinese President Xi Jinping made his first trip to North Korea since 2019, arriving in Pyongyang for a two‑day official visit. He was received at Sunan International Airport by Kim Jong Un and his wife, followed by a ceremony at Kim Il‑sung Square that included a 21‑gun salute and a guard of honour. During their talks, Xi said the China‑DPRK relationship stands at a “new historical starting point” and emphasized China’s “unwavering friendship” and continued support for North Korea’s socialist path, without mentioning nuclear weapons. The visit coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1961 China‑North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, which remains China’s only formal defence pact with another country. Analysts note the timing reflects Beijing’s intent to reinforce its influence over the strategically important neighbour as Pyongyang’s ties with Russia have deepened after the Ukraine war, including reports of North Korean troops in Russia. The diplomatic outreach is aimed at maintaining regional stability and ensuring North Korea does not become a source of crisis that could affect China.
