Automotive market shifts toward hybrid and electric vehicle technologies

The automotive landscape is undergoing a significant shift toward electrification and hybrid technologies. In Indonesia, hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are increasingly challenging the dominance of low-cost conventional cars (LCGC) by offering fuel efficiency and flexibility without total reliance on charging infrastructure. Toyota has reported a 40% increase in sales within the low MPV segment, driven largely by the New Veloz Hybrid EV, which now holds a 66.2% market share in that category.

Global developments also highlight advancements in battery longevity and diverse vehicle types. A study by Aviloo found that Mercedes-Benz CLA maintains a 94% battery state of health after 150,000 km, outperforming several competitors. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has expanded into the SUV market with its Sky Nomad line, utilizing extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology to achieve a combined range of up to 1,700 km.

In Indonesia, the ecosystem is expanding through infrastructure and specialized applications. PLN has launched premium 'Signature' charging stations in Depok to support growing demand. In the industrial sector, VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas is promoting electric commercial vehicles, such as the 8-meter 'Arjuno' electric bus, as efficient solutions for the mining industry. Additionally, safety regulations for transporting electric vehicles by sea require batteries to be kept below 50% charge to ensure usability upon arrival.
