Global hybrid vehicle market expansion

Overview

The global automotive market is seeing a significant shift toward hybrid technology. In the United States, hybrid vehicles reached a record 16% market share in early 2026, while battery electric vehicle (BEV) market share fell to 6% following the expiration of government tax incentives in late 2025.

In Southeast Asia, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models are challenging conventional car dominance. In Indonesia, Toyota reported a 40% increase in its low MPV segment sales due to the popularity of the Veloz Hybrid EV. In Vietnam, electrified vehicles remained a strong segment despite overall seasonal declines in automotive sales.

As the technology matures, interest is expanding into the used car market. In Hungary, recent statistics indicate that hybrid vehicles have become the “best investment” in the used car market due to lower depreciation rates. On average, hybrids lose only 5.7% of their value annually, outperforming gasoline (6.9%), diesel (7.5%), and fully electric models (7.7%).

While traditional internal combustion engines still dominate the Hungarian market, hybrid listings saw the largest growth, rising by nearly 50%. The market landscape is also shifting as traditional German and Japanese brands become more expensive, while Chinese manufacturers increase their presence and South Korean manufacturers, such as KGM, emerge as significant, rational choices for consumers.
