Xu Jiayin sentenced to life imprisonment for Evergrande fraud

Xu Jiayin, the founder of China Evergrande Group, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Shenzhen. He was found guilty of multiple financial crimes, including fraud in fund raising, illegal absorption of public deposits, misappropriation of resources, and bribery. Authorities have also ordered the confiscation of his personal assets.

Evergrande and its real estate division have been fined a total of $2.21 billion. The conglomerate’s collapse, marked by liabilities exceeding $300 billion, represents one of the largest corporate debt crises in recent history. Investigations revealed that between 2016 and 2021, the company manipulated financial data to inflate assets and conceal obligations.

The crisis has left hundreds of thousands of unfinished housing units across more than 100 cities. This has created a severe burden for homebuyers who must continue paying mortgages for properties they cannot inhabit, often while simultaneously paying rent. Many families face significant financial strain and frozen assets as the company's debt to suppliers, financial institutions, and individual buyers remains largely unaddressed.
