Xylella fastidiosa monitoring and research updates in Italy
Agricultural officials and researchers are addressing the impact of Xylella fastidiosa on crops in Italy. In Basilicata, Regional Councilor Carmine Cicala is scheduled to conduct a technical inspection in Matera to monitor the presence of the Xylella fastidiosa subspecies multiplex. This inspection is part of a broader effort to manage containment and prevention, alongside discussions regarding rising costs for fuel, energy, and fertilizers affecting farm profitability.
In a separate scientific development, researchers from the University of Tuscia and the Lazio regional phytosanitary service presented findings at a European conference regarding the multiplex strain (ST87) isolated in the Viterbo and Tuscany regions. Data indicates that this specific strain exhibits ‘practically zero’ virulence. In controlled environment tests involving Spanish almond cultivars, no symptoms were recorded five months after inoculation, and bacterial loads were observed to decrease.
