Yakubu Gowon University launches 3 MW solar hybrid power facility
The Nigerian Federal Government has commissioned a 3 MW solar hybrid power facility at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja. Developed under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme, the project was implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) with financial support from the World Bank through the Nigeria Electrification Project.
The facility features a 3.3 MWp solar power generation system, a 3 MW AC output capacity, and a 2 MWh battery energy storage system. It is designed to provide reliable, cleaner electricity to over 58,000 students and staff, reducing the university’s reliance on diesel generators. The power supply supports academic buildings, research laboratories, administrative offices, and digital infrastructure.
In addition to the power plant, 388 solar-powered streetlights were installed to enhance campus security and visibility. A Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre has also been established to provide practical training in renewable technologies. The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has inspected and certified the project to ensure compliance with technical standards and safety regulations.
