Yakushima issued Level 5 landslide warning due to Typhoon Krovanh
Typhoon Krovanh and a tropical depression have triggered severe weather across southwestern Japan, leading the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a Level 5 emergency landslide warning for Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture. The warning, issued at 5:10 a.m. on Saturday, highlighted an extremely high risk of landslides following record-breaking rainfall. In the Onoaida district of Yakushima, 24-hour rainfall reached 490.5 mm.
The Level 5 warning was downgraded to a Level 4 danger warning for Yakushima at 11:30 a.m., though residents were urged to remain vigilant. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi issued an urgent plea for residents to prioritize safety and move to secure locations away from cliffs and riverbeds.
Heavy rainfall has also impacted Miyazaki Prefecture, where multiple municipalities, including Miyaki City, Tano, and Kobayashi, faced Level 4 landslide warnings. Rainfall totals in parts of Miyazaki exceeded 300 mm. Typhoon Krovanh remains near Okinawa, and its slow movement is expected to continue feeding moisture into weather fronts near mainland Japan, maintaining a high risk of flooding and landslides.
