Yamaha to launch YZF‑R2 sportbike in India on August 27
Yamaha Motor India is set to unveil the new YZF‑R2, a 200 cc fully‑faired sportbike, at a launch event scheduled for 27 August 2026. The model will be produced at Yamaha’s Chennai plant and is positioned between the company’s R15 and R3, aiming to compete directly with the KTM RC 200 and other 200‑250 cc entry‑level performance bikes.
The YZF‑R2 will feature a liquid‑cooled single‑cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation delivering roughly 24‑25 hp and 19 Nm of torque, paired with a six‑speed gearbox, assist‑and‑slipper clutch, dual‑channel ABS, upside‑down front forks and a monoshock rear suspension. Riders can expect a TFT display with Bluetooth, Y‑Connect integration, quick‑shifter, selectable riding modes and possibly cruise control. Yamaha has filed trademarks for the YZF‑R2 in multiple markets, signalling plans for export beyond India.
Pricing is projected between INR 2.10 lakh and INR 2.30 lakh, reflecting a strategy to offer premium features at a relatively accessible price point. The launch may also see the introduction of Yamaha’s NMax 155 scooter at the same event.
