Yamuna River cleaning drive sees 35,000 participants in Delhi
Under the ‘Chalo Yamuna’ (Swachh Yamuna Prahari) campaign, a massive cleaning drive was conducted across the Yamuna River in Delhi. More than 35,000 residents participated in a single morning, cleaning 70 ghats and various key locations, including Wazirabad, Signature Bridge, ITO, and Nizamuddin.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta joined the drive at Hathi Ghat, urging citizens to make cleanliness a daily lifestyle rather than a one-day event. She noted that the river is often polluted by religious offerings, broken idols, plastic, and food wrappers, emphasizing that river preservation is a collective responsibility.
Water Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh stated that the initiative aims to strengthen the emotional connection between citizens and the river. He highlighted that while cleaning ghats is vital, permanent solutions require stopping sewage from entering the river. To this end, the government is working on 43 water projects valued at approximately 8,941 crore rupees. These projects aim to collect and treat every drop of sewage for reuse. Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for several of these projects on October 22.
