Yamuna River cleaning campaign in Delhi

Overview

A large-scale cleaning initiative, the ‘Chalo Yamuna’ (Swachh Yamuna Prahari) campaign, was conducted along the Yamuna River in Delhi. Approximately 35,000 participants cleaned 70 ghats and several key locations, including Wazirabad, Signature Bridge, ITO, and Nizamuddin.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in the drive, noting that pollution is frequently caused by plastic, food wrappers, and religious offerings. To address long-term issues, Water Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh stated the government is working on 43 water projects worth roughly 8,941 crore rupees to treat sewage for reuse. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to inaugurate several of these projects on October 22.

Amidst the campaign, Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra joined the cleaning efforts and criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party administration. Malhotra alleged that the former government failed to implement concrete plans despite receiving approximately 2,900 crore rupees from the central government for river sanitation. He stated that the current administration has developed a plan to clean a 33-kilometer stretch of the river within the capital.
