Yaqut Cholil Qoumas contests Hajj quota corruption charges
Former Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas is facing trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court regarding the alleged mismanagement of Hajj quotas for 2023 and 2024. The defense maintains that the 50:50 split of additional quotas was a technical decision made to ensure pilgrim safety by managing overcrowding in Muzdalifah and Mina, and falls under the minister's administrative authority.
During recent proceedings, Yaqut challenged the KPK to provide a transparent method for calculating the alleged state losses. Additionally, the court rejected a request from the defense to move Yaqut from KPK detention to house arrest, ruling that his medical needs could be managed within the current detention facility.
