Yaqut Cholil Qoumas Hajj corruption trial proceeds after court rejects objection
A Jakarta corruption court has rejected the interlocutory objection (eksepsi) filed by former Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas. The decision by presiding judge Ni Kadek Susantiani means the corruption case regarding the management of the 2023 and 2024 Hajj quotas will proceed to the evidentiary stage.
KPK prosecutors allege that Yaqut and several co-defendants caused state losses of approximately Rp622.09 billion. The charges stem from an alleged decision to change the 2024 additional Hajj quota distribution from a 92:8 ratio (regular to special pilgrims) to a 50:50 split without technical studies. Prosecutors also claim Yaqut personally received approximately 271,500 US Dollars.
During the proceedings, Fadlul Imansyah, Head of the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH), testified that any surplus funds from special Hajj pilgrims are returned to the pilgrims via travel agencies rather than being kept by the agency or the state. Yaqut's legal team maintains that the charges lack concrete evidence and that the court's decision is not a final verdict, expressing readiness to present facts during the upcoming evidentiary hearings.
