Kumamoto earthquake relief efforts intensify in Yatsushiro
Two weeks after a major earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, relief efforts in Yatsushiro City are intensifying. The disaster has resulted in 39 deaths and 211 total casualties, with over 21,000 homes damaged and 34,040 households facing water outages.
International and regional cooperation is facilitating aid. The Kaohsiung City government in Taiwan, in partnership with Kitakyushu City, deployed a food truck from the Sukisan Udon chain to provide hot meals to evacuees in Yatsushiro, addressing local requests for warm food. Meanwhile, Yatsushiro has officially opened volunteer registration and started accepting applications for disaster victim certificates.
Challenges remain in logistics and recovery. Volunteers have highlighted a ‘last mile’ issue, where supplies struggle to reach individual homes from central hubs. Additionally, official evacuation numbers may underrepresent the true scale of displacement, as many residents are currently sheltering in vehicles. Economic impacts are also being felt in tourism sectors like Aso and Amakusa, which have reported significant booking cancellations.
