Yautepec implements municipal environmental protection program
The municipality of Yautepec, Morelos, has officially launched its Municipal Program for Environmental Care. Published in the Official Gazette 'Tierra y Libertad', the strategic document outlines a roadmap for the conservation of water, soil, air, and green spaces.
The program identifies several critical environmental challenges, including air pollution caused by vehicle emissions and sugarcane burning, as well as the overexploitation of aquifers, untreated wastewater discharges, and the excessive use of agrochemicals. To address waste management, authorities plan to supervise the 'Ojo Seco' municipal disposal site with the long-term goal of environmental remediation and its definitive closure to mitigate odors, pests, and groundwater contamination.
Additionally, the plan aims to protect key natural areas, including Sierra Montenegro, the Ajusco-Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, and portions of the Tepozteco National Park. Measures include annual boundary surveys and technical training for local residents to prevent illegal land-use changes and deforestation.
In Ecatepec, municipal authorities reported the removal of over 300,000 tons of trash from public roads. Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss led cleaning efforts in the El Chamizal area, which included clearing six kilometers along railway tracks. The administration also noted ongoing efforts in park recovery and road maintenance.
