Environmental and urban improvement initiatives in Mexico

Overview

Local authorities in the State of Mexico have expanded various environmental protection, sanitation, and urban improvement programs.

In Yautepec, Morelos, the municipality officially launched its Municipal Program for Environmental Care via the Official Gazette ‘Tierra y Libertad’. This strategic roadmap targets the conservation of water, soil, air, and green spaces by addressing challenges such as vehicle emissions, sugarcane burning, aquifer overexploitation, and untreated wastewater. The plan includes the long-term remediation and definitive closure of the ‘Ojo Seco’ disposal site to prevent groundwater contamination and pests. Furthermore, the program aims to protect natural areas including Sierra Montenegro, the Ajusco-Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, and parts of the Tepozteco National Park through boundary surveys and technical training to prevent deforestation.

In Toluca, the Human Rights Commission of the State of Mexico (CODHEM) and the City Council have intensified the ‘Toluca se pone guapa’ initiative. This program, which involves various local institutions, focuses on improving public spaces to uphold the right to a healthy environment. CODHEM president Víctor Leopoldo Delgado Pérez has emphasized that ‘a clean environment is, in fact, an exercised human right’ and has announced plans to expand these environmental actions and training to other CODHEM locations. Mayor Ricardo Moreno has also called for community participation in the ‘Yo Pongo Guapa Toluca’ component of the initiative to maintain urban spaces across various delegations.

Other regional efforts include a cleaning campaign in Atotonilco de Tula to restore natural spaces near the Tula River, and a cemetery remodeling project in Tantoyuca.
