Yemen: 260,000 displaced since August amid rising conflict

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that escalating fighting in Yemen has forced approximately 260,000 people to flee their homes since the beginning of August. Nearly half of these displaced individuals have sought refuge in the Taiz governorate.

OCHA has verified 251 civilian casualties, including 57 deaths and 194 injuries, noting that children account for half of the fatalities. While humanitarian partners have reached over 174,000 displaced persons with food, hygiene kits, and cash assistance, the scale of need continues to outpace available aid. Displaced families report that shelter remains the most urgent requirement, followed by food and financial support.

In Taiz, local authorities have issued an urgent warning regarding an imminent health catastrophe. A blockade imposed by Houthi forces has led to severe shortages of fuel, medicine, and medical supplies. This scarcity threatens the operation of neonatal incubators and essential healthcare services, placing the lives of newborns and premature infants at grave risk. Local officials are calling for immediate intervention to ensure the continuity of life-saving medical care.
