Yemen conflict displaces 112,000 people and triggers sea crossings to Djibouti
Renewed fighting along Yemen’s west and Red Sea coasts has displaced at least 112,000 people internally over a two-week period, according to reports from United Nations agencies.
In addition to internal displacement, nearly 3,000 people have fled by sea to Djibouti in less than a week. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that many arrivals arrived on overcrowded boats with very limited food and water. While most arrivals are Yemeni families, some migrants from Ethiopia were also noted.
Djibouti is currently preparing for a potential influx of up to 10,000 refugees. The UNHCR warned that such a scale of arrival would place serious pressure on the country’s health and education services.
