Renewed fighting in Yemen between Houthi rebels and government-loyal forces has triggered a massive wave of displacement. The United Nations reports that over 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes due to escalating hostilities along the country's western coast. Some estimates from OCHA suggest the number of displaced individuals could be as high as 125,000.

As Houthi rebels advance along the Red Sea coast and seize control of strategic areas including the Bab al-Mandeb strait, thousands of people are attempting to cross the sea to reach Djibouti. In a recent four-day period, more than 2,400 people arrived in Djibouti, many of whom are women, children, and the elderly arriving in exhausted condition. However, a fuel shortage within Yemen is reportedly hindering the ability of many others to make the dangerous journey.

The humanitarian situation is critical. The UNHCR has stated that it requires approximately $14 million in new funding to address the urgent needs of displaced families, including food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare. The conflict also threatens the safety of over 65,000 registered refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia already residing in Yemen.
