Houthi attacks target southern Saudi Arabian cities and energy infrastructure
Fighting has escalated significantly in Yemen, with Houthi rebels launching a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks against southern Saudi Arabian cities, including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran. These strikes have reportedly injured at least 73 civilians and caused fires at energy sector facilities and oil infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has warned that these actions pose a severe threat to maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait.
In Yemen, the conflict has intensified on multiple fronts, including Taiz, Marib, and the western coast. The Houthis have made territorial gains, including control over the Al Hudaydah governorate and parts of the western coast near Mocha. Meanwhile, government forces have launched counter-offensives in provinces like Al-Jawf. The World Health Organization reported that clashes have resulted in over 1,000 casualties, including 194 deaths, since late August.
The regional implications are growing, with Pakistan warning that continued Houthi aggression could trigger the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a security pact involving Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. The escalation follows the unraveling of a UN-brokered truce and occurs amid heightened regional tensions.
