Yemen conflict escalates as Huthi militia launches maritime blockade
Conflict in Yemen is experiencing its most severe escalation in years, threatening to destabilize the broader Middle East. The violence has resurfaced following a period of relative calm, driven by tensions linked to the ongoing Iran-related regional conflicts.
The current escalation was triggered in July by airstrikes in the Huthi-controlled capital, Sanaa. These strikes were conducted by the internationally recognized government to prevent the landing of an Iranian aircraft, an attempt by the Huthi to challenge the airspace control maintained by the Saudi-led coalition. In response, the Huthi have declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabian vessels and have launched attacks on ships and targets within the Gulf.
The Huthi, officially known as Ansar Allah, have controlled much of northern Yemen and the Red Sea coast since seizing power in 2014. While a ceasefire was established in 2022, recent developments suggest a significant shift. The International Crisis Group notes that the Huthi appear emboldened by the regional climate and suggests that Iran may be supporting their recent maneuvers, marking a departure from Tehran's previous efforts toward de-escalation in Yemen.
