United Kingdom deploys fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia
The United Kingdom is deploying RAF Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to bolster the kingdom's defensive capabilities against Houthi attacks. The mission is strictly defensive, aimed at protecting cities and vital infrastructure, and will not involve offensive strikes within Yemeni territory.
In addition to the fighter jets, the UK is sending an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisors to support Saudi staff officers. London is also extending its air-to-air refueling support for Saudi air operations by 90 days.
This military escalation follows a deadly Houthi attack on a government security training center in Yemen's Shabwa governorate, which has resulted in a death toll of 73 people. Amidst rising regional tensions and security concerns, Saudi Arabia has announced the postponement of its ‘Davos in the Desert’ investment summit to 2027.
Separately, oil markets have reacted to increased instability in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude has returned to trading above $110 per barrel following reports of escalating vessel attacks in the strategic waterway.
