Yemen violence causes mass displacement and civilian casualties
Escalating violence in Yemen between government forces and Houthi rebels has led to a sharp rise in civilian casualties and mass displacement. UN agencies report that displacement camps and health centers have been targeted during the recent surge in fighting.
The World Health Organization recorded 3,672 killed or wounded between August 6 and September 18, with a significant spike in casualties occurring in mid-September. In the Lahj governorate, an ambulance driver and a medic were killed on September 18.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk documented three attacks by Ansar Allah on displacement sites in the Marib region since August, resulting in dozens of casualties, including five children. Since August, the UN has documented 32 civilian deaths, including 15 children and three women.
UNHCR warns that internal displacement could exceed 230,000 people within a month, noting that over 130,000 people have already fled their homes since early September. Taiz governorate accounts for more than 60 percent of these cases. Additionally, refugee flows continue across the Gulf of Aden, with thousands arriving in Djibouti and Somalia.
