Yemen fighting intensifies as Houthi rebels and government forces clash
Fighting in Yemen is escalating, threatening the fragile peace established by the 2022 UN-mediated truce. Intense clashes have broken out across multiple fronts, including the western provinces of Taiz and Hodeidah, as well as the northern province of Al-Jawf.
Houthi rebels have launched offensives aimed at securing territory near the Bab al-Mandab strait and the port of Mocha, which could grant them significant leverage over vital Red Sea shipping lanes. Simultaneously, the internationally recognized Yemeni government has launched counter-offensives, utilizing newly acquired modern drones and aircraft to challenge Houthi control.
The conflict is expanding on two fronts: internal combat between government forces and Houthi militias, and increased tensions along the border with Saudi Arabia, where Houthi attacks have been reported. Analysts suggest the escalation may be driven by Houthi efforts to force concessions from Saudi Arabia and secure more control over national oil revenues.
